“The wonders of the Grand Canyon cannot be adequately represented in symbols of speech….
Language and illustration combined must fail.”

John Wesley Powell

Powell may be right. But through the intervening 135 years, countless authors have tried in one fashion or another to capture the Grand Canyon—and other Arizona places—in speech, image or film. Some have succeeded better than others. You’ll find many of those successes listed here.

We selected books, trail and field guides, and pictorials that best portray Arizona’s public lands. Whether you are a backcountry hiker or camper, natural history buff, conservationist, day-hiker, biker, OHVer, or just interested in learning more about Arizona’s remarkable geography, ecology or geology, there should be something here for you.
